Rule №1 with visitors to our amazing city of Milwaukee: Don’t take I-94 home from Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport (MKE). Take 794 and the Hoan Bridge into Downtown. The reasoning here is simple. The views, landmarks, and general aesthetics of this drive are far more appealing than the boring nature of the I-94 drive into Downtown.
The next time you pick someone up at the airport, do your guest (and me) a favor — don’t take I-94, take 794 and the Hoan Bridge into Downtown. This, of course, assumes that your destination is Downtown, but works even if you’re heading west.
If you believe in the “never have a second chance to make a first impression” adage, you’ll jump on this tip for your next airport pick-up. Milwaukee looks amazing from this view and this drive presents our community in a wonderful light.
Here’s the rundown. The next time you drive to Downtown from MKE take Howell to Layton and then get on 794 North. Sidenote, we need better signs. Something that says “Milwaukee | Downtown this way.” “North 794” means nothing to too many.
794, of course, takes you over the Hoan Bridge and into the heart of the city. The views are breathtaking. You’ll see the Milwaukee Art Museum, Discovery World, Summerfest, Lake Michigan, countless cranes that scream “Milwaukee is growing,” AmFam Field is to your left, and several other landmarks, too. It’s a great drive, especially when the sun is shining.
So, that’s my greater Milwaukee tip of the day. Try it and let me know what you and your visitors to our city think.
